Description: Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Beyer-Garratt D31 with non-prototype black lined livery - Updated for use in TS19 DHR Updating project and DLS upload on behalf of narrowgauge by clam1952 and now euromodeller with original permission from Ben Neal. Many thanks to Ben Neal for allowing this update for the DHR. *** Please abide by Ben's original licence *** Number 31 was the only Beyer-Garratt used by the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. It was constructed in late 1910 at Beyer-Peacock's Gorton works. It was shipped to India in January 1911 and entered service in June of that year. While capable of navigating the curves of the DHR, it did not live up to the expectations of the railway. It was rarely used, but it remained on the roster until 1954. 31 was the first true Beyer-Garratt. The two earlier engines built for the Tasmanian Government Railways had been compound, reusing the exhaust steam from one set of cylinders to power the other set. 31 was simple, the steam went straight from the boiler to both sets of cylinders.
