Description: The Overland - Melbourne to Adelaide For over a hundred years the Overland over-nightly pounded the arduous miles between Adelaide and Melbourne in both directions. Originally known as the 'Intercolonial Express' the service commenced on January 19, 1887. The Railway was Australia's first intercaptial connection without a break of Gauge, and the passenger service was operated using rolling stock jointly owned by South Australia and Victoria. During 1936 the train was named 'the Overland' during a facelift. The first diesel powered Overland pulled out of Adelaide Station on November 19 1951. Air conditioned steel cars were built between 1949 and 1972 at the S.A.R Islington Workshops replacing wooden bodied cars in service on the train. Carriages built prior to 1970 were fitted with axle driven generators and converted to head end power in 1970.
