Did you know? Many of these locomotives have been repainted to commemorate special occasions, such as the 50th anniversary of CBC/Radio-Canada and the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. They have also been used to advertise products and contests for Telus, Kool-Aid, Loto-Québec, Budweiser, and Operation Lifesaver. Thanks to new funding announced by the Government of Canada in October 2007, VIA launched a program to rebuild its fleet of 53 General Motors F-40 locomotives. This will extend the railway life of each car, as well as add more environmentally-friendly features like a separate HEP generator and improved emissions controls.
Via F40PH 6401-6458 Between 2007–2012 Via refurbished its entire fleet The rebuild program included separate HEP generators, overhauled engines, a 3rd headlight addition, cab reconditioning, additional safety horns at the front, and repainting into the newer VIA scheme As of 2018, VIA has 53 such locomotives in service.
