Deutsche Bundesbahn V200

V200

Entering service between 1956-1959, the V200 class helped to seal the fate of steam traction on the German Railways.

At the end of the 50's, increasing loads saw the v200's constantly worked at their maximum output; and during 1960-1962, a more powerful version using 2 X 1350hp engines was developed. Weight was also reconsidered, and reductions were brought about by use of a lighter steam-heating boiler, and also a lighter frame.

These 50 units were given a new classification, V200.1. Interestingly, Germany experimented no further with dual engined locomotives beyond this class; returning to a policy of more economical single engined vehicles.

The V200 was displaced in the 80's as electrification became more widespread, though there are some examples still in service on other European railways.
