Dubbed "the World Series locomotive" after the name given to it's gauge adaptable bogies, the DL500 in it's various incarnations has served numerous systems worldwide.
The reasonably low axle loading of these handsome machines made them versatile units suited to a range of operating conditions and traffic.
Built by Goodwin under license from ALCO, the Australian DL500 played an important role displacing large steam traction in the late 50's and 60's; and lashed into multiples of 2 or 3 units, were a common sight on the NSW and SA systems.
Today, most units have been withdrawn from service, though there are several examples of the class worldwide which have been restored or stored for preservation.
The Spanish order of 40 units consisted of both 1600hp and 1800hp locomotives, some of which are now owned and operated by private track maintenance companies.
