PRR T1 - A Fleet of Modernism - Released!
Trainz Add-on Pack

Click to view Video - The PRR T1 'A Fleet of Modernism' Add-on Pack The PRR T1 'A Fleet of Modernism' Add-on Pack recreates the striking image of these shark nosed behemoths in their days of speeding the 'Fleet of Modernism' cars to their destination on trains such as 'The Broadway Limited' and 'The General'. Step into the cab and take charge of these mighty horses, relax in the comfort of your roomette, or enjoy the view from the observation lounge.

History
During the 1930's, competition with the increasingly popular automobile saw many railroads attempt to become a more attractive option by modernising their equipment. 'Streamline Moderne' was the style of the day and it's design trademarks were employed to repackage rail travel in a way that inspired a new sense of confidence in it's service.

Refurbishment saw classically decorated heavyweight carriages give way to smooth-sided designs of steel construction, and interior appointments kept in step with all the modern conveniences. Flowing, aerodynamic appearance was characteristic of the streamline style, and brought a sleek, speedy and futuristic look to the railroads. Drastically falling passenger revenues on the Pennsylvania Railroad caused the administration to consider it's own future in the streamlined world, and vision was required to create an identity that would capture the imagination of the travelling public. Driving Steam Locomotives in CAB Mode - tips and tricks

Steam locomotives in Trainz, as per the prototype, require many 'tricks' or 'skills' to drive effectively, and efficiently. As most steam locomotives vary from each other, the practices for driving different locomotives will be slightly different. However, there are some techniques which can help to improve the experience of driving steam locomotives in Trainz, some of which are below.
  • When starting your train, slowly open the regulator on the locomotive. Most locomotives should start moving with the regulator at about 5% without any load, and between 5-10% with most loads. This allows steam to slowly expand in the cylinders, giving a more even amount of power to the wheels and track, and will help to prevent wheelslip by slowly increasing the power to the wheels as the steam-chest pressure rises. If the locomotive does not start moving after a couple of seconds, slowly increase the regulator until you start to slowly move forward. Once you are moving, you can increase the regulator more rapidly to give more power, so as to reach the speedlimit quicker.

  • When first starting your train, ensure that the 'cut-off' (reverser) is in the 'full forward' position (+75%). This ensures that the maximum amount of steam is admitted to the cylinders for the maximum amount of time (the cut-off controls how long steam is allowed to enter/exit the cylinders). As you gain speed, slowly bring the cut-off back toward the 'central' position. If you do not do this, you will be wasting steam, and may start sucking the fire, and coal out of the firebox through the boiler (wasting coal!). The HUD will indicate when you are blowing holes in your fire (sucking coal/fire through the boiler) by flashing the cut-off indication yellow. You should either reduce the regulator or cut-off to prevent this (if accelerating, reduce the cut-off). A reduced cut-off will also allow you to reach much higher speeds than at full-forward.

  • When driving hard, you will use a lot more steam than when driving lightly, and this can be difficult to maintain. However, you can maintain a good head of steam by monitoring the fire, and by monitoring the water level of the boiler. Generally, the water level is best kept at approximately 70-80% (as shown in the water gauge glass or the HUD). In Trainz, the 'coal level' (as shown in the HUD) should be kept at approximately 100%, since this is the 'optimum' firing level for most locomotives. The firebox doors should be kept partially, or fully closed when not adding coal.

  • When stationary, working lightly, or coasting, you may need to open the 'Blower'. This introduces a draft through the firebox, which draws air through the fire to produce a hotter fire. This also occurs when the locomotive is working, however the blower is required when working lightly (or not at all), so as to ensure that the fire still receives a draft. However, the blower does run off the boiler pressure, and as such can also use steam if not used carefully. The blower is increased by pressing the 'N' key, and reduced by pressing 'CTRL' + 'N'.

  • When coasting, it is good practice to leave the regulator open a small amount, so as to ensure that you are still putting power to the wheels. If you are gaining more speed than desired, then you may need to increase the cut-off (much like gearing down in a manual car).

  • The last section covered here is the 'steam chest' pressure. This is effectively the steam pressure in the cylinders. If you have the regulator open a small amount (5-10%), then you should see the steam pressure slowly rise. The exact pressure a locomotive will start moving at will depend on the locomotive, and the weight of the train.
Please note, the above information is intended for Trainz Classics 3 and newer, and is intended for use with steam locomotives created for Trainz Classics 3 and newer.
